EYECANDYAIR was able to catch up with a member of our goalie family
Charles Fung from Toronto, Ontario, CANADA
To do this special exclusive one-on-one interview!
ECA: What inspired you to be a goalie?
CF: I've always loved the position, something about being the last line of defense just appeals to me. Shopping for goalie equipment is a lot of fun too!
ECA: How old were you when you started?
CF: I started playing goal when I was 10 but that was just road and roller hockey. It wasn't until I was in my early 20's that I started playing ice hockey because I could afford to buy my own equipment.
ECA: What is the highest level you have played?
CF: I've really only played in beer leagues and tournaments but the highest level I've participated in would be ASHL B level games....mostly C.
ECA: Did you ever have a goalie coach?
CF: Not really, attended a few clinics with Dave Wells but that was it.
ECA: What style of goaltending do you play?
ECA: How many times a week do you play?
CF: Usually once a week, twice if I'm lucky.
ECA: What are your strengths?
CF: I'd like to say my positional play is pretty sound, I have pretty quick hands as well.
ECA: Care to add weaknesses?
CF: My defense j/k.....no comment ; )
ECA: Who is your favourite NHL goalie?
CF: I don't really have a favorite but if I had to pick from current NHL goalies I'd say Luongo and Ward.
ECA: What type of gear are you wearing?
CF: Mostly RBK, Sportmask T3 with a sick paint job!
ECA: What was the inspiration behind your goalie mask design?
CF: My wife and I visit Las Vegas regularly so we consider it our home away from home. I really wanted to incorporate a Vegas theme into my mask some how. The Lion theme comes from my astrological sign and the MGM Grand lion logo. I was really looking for a design that was visible from a distance and I think Steve really did a great job. The colour scheme of the mask works perfectly with the theme and my equipment as well.
ECA: Do you have any game superstitions?
CF: Not really, although I won't have an energy drink before a game. It could just be a coincidence but I've never played well after having one.
ECA: Any advice to other goalies out there?
CF: Considering I'm not as experienced as other goalies out there, I'm not sure if I should be giving advice. If I had to say one thing it would be don't skimp on your equipment, especially your mask, it's worth the money for the added protection.
ECA: Anything else you'd like to add?
CF: A big thanks to Steve and Steph for bringing my ideas to life! I loved my lid before the paint and now it's just that much better!
Charles, that was so much fun! Thanks for taking time to chat with us and share your goaltending experiences and thoughts for all to read.
Best of luck on the ice and enjoy your EYECANDYAIR custom painted goalie mask!
